A brand new comedy series is set to hit Amazon Prime this month and fans are already 'screaming and crying' before it is even released. Clean Slate features Laverne Cox in a leading role, boasts an all-star cast and comes from the legendary TV producer Norman Lear, known for creating sitcoms like All In The Family and Good Times. Despite his sad death in December 2023 at the age of 101, Lear was still working on the show as recently as 2022.
Now, all episodes will be exclusively available for Amazon Prime subscribers to stream on their platform. Here's everything you need to know about the series including its release date, full cast and more... All episodes of Clean Slate are set to drop later this month from February 6, with all instalments available at once for fans to binge-watch at their leisure. The first season should consist of eight episodes in total.
According to the synopsis provided by Amazon, the show centres around Harry Slate, played by comedian George Wallace, who is an old-school and outspoken Alabama car wash owner. Harry is forced to do some serious soul searching when his estranged child returns home as a proud, trans woman named Desiree, portrayed by Laverne Cox. Desiree is on a mission to mend her strained relationship with her father, as they navigate their differences while living together. They hilariously experience the coming-of-age milestones they missed the first time around, reports the Mirror US. Meanwhile, Mack (Jay Wilkison), Harry's right-hand man at the car wash, develops an interest in Desiree as their flirtation progresses throughout the series.
Desiree’s return as her authentic self also turns the church on its head, and puts a strain on her relationship with her closeted best friend and choir director, Louis (D.K. Uzoukwu). Meanwhile, Louis’ mother, Ella (Telma Hopkins) and Harry also get closer to romance. What was thought to be a temporary homecoming could end up being a planting of fresh roots for Desiree, as she realises her hometown could have space for her after all.
The series is led by Laverne Cox, who is best known for her breakout role as Sophia Burset in the Netflix series Orange Is The New Black. She has since appeared in the film Promising Young Woman and a few episodes of The Blacklist. George Wallace, renowned for his stand-up comedy career, plays Harry. Wallace has had several supporting roles in his acting career, including the Mayor in Batman Forever, and most recently appeared in Jerry Seinfeld's cereal movie Unfrosted.
The cast lineup is bolstered by Jay Wilkison, known for his roles in Younger, alongside Telma Hopkins who shines in Dead To Me and Family Matters. D. K. Uzoukwu of Commune fame also joins the roster. Before its release on Amazon Prime, the series has already garnered excitement among viewers, with many sharing their enthusiasm under the show’s first look trailer. Comments from eager fans included: "I'm screaming and crying. I'm so happy! Laverne as the lead in a series, omg!" and "George Wallace is an under used American treasure. Laverne Cox just keeps getting more beautiful. I love this for them both. Bravo!".
