Conor McGregor trophy celebration leads football club to issue damning statement

Irish football club Drogheda United have released a statement distancing themselves from Conor McGregor after the UFC star shared several snaps posing with the FAI Cup trophy. Drogheda shocked the nation following a 2-0 win over Derry City in November to lift the FAI Cup for the second time in the club's history - with Andrew Quinn and Douglas James-Taylor scoring the goals.
McGregor's cousin, Warren Davis, was part of the cup-winning side. Davis, 19, was promoted to the first team after impressing the club following his eye-catching performances in the youth set-up. Despite featuring regularly in the League of Ireland Premier Division last season, Davis didn't make an appearance in the cup final. McGregor recently congratulated his cousin for winning the cup as he posed for several snaps with the 19-year-old in a post uploaded to Instagram.
“Yup the gaf, The Black Forge Inn!” McGregor wrote on Instagram. "FAI cup in the house! Congrats my cuz Warren David on winning the fai trophy with Drogheda United Football Club! That’s two of my cousins now who have won this prestigious Irish Football League trophy. One with Bohs, Keith, and one with Drogheda, Warren!! Tremendous! It’s in the blood!” The 36-year-old recently edited the caption, with the post now reading: "Yup the gaf, @theblackforgeinn.".
After the former two-division champion was quick to praise his cousin, Davis' club swiftly distanced themselves from the MMA icon. Drogheda made it evidently clear that they are not associated with him in any way. The official statement reads: "A social media post has been brought to our attention today regarding the FAI Cup. Those pictured are a close relation to one of our first team players, who like all the other players had custody of the cup to celebrate with their families at different intervals.
