Darwin Nunez praised for proving Arne Slot wrong as Liverpool told 'that's how you win titles'

Arne Slot owned up to Liverpool's struggles getting the most out of Darwin Nunez, especially against deep-lying opposition defences, but the striker earned widespread praise after seizing his moment at Brentford. Initially, substitute Nunez looked as though he would prolong his dry spell at the Gtech Community Stadium. He spurned a couple of half-chances off-target after coming on for the final half-hour, planting a header wide and later blasting a shot well off-target when a pass looked like the more sensible option.
He wasn't done, though, pouncing at the death to turn one point into three for Slot's team. There was even time for a second goal deep into stoppage-time, helping league leaders Liverpool ramp up the pressure on the chasing pack. Liverpool's front three had flattered to deceive in West London, with midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai coming closest to finding a way past Mark Flekken. Nunez ended up being the hero, though, and the importance of the late intervention was felt by those watching on.
"Arne Slot said in the week that he couldn't get Darwin Nunez firing. What an important goal that could be for Liverpool," pundit Chris Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live. "He's not going to miss those sort of opportunities. Former Premier League winner Sutton recognised the value of striking so late. "That's how you win titles," he continued. "Going to the end, fighting until the end and taking your opportunities. The much maligned Darwin Nunez - he doesn't score enough goals, doesn't contribute enough - well he has now.
