Funnyman Dave Hughes has spoken out about his past battles with alcohol. The Herald Sun reported on Saturday that the former 2DayFM breakfast show host, 54, revealed his drinking had previously found him on the wrong side of the law. The publication reports that in scenes from Sunday night's I'm A Celebrity episode, Dave revealed to his fellow campmates that despite 'loving' getting drunk, he has not touched a drop in more than three decades.
'I just loved getting drunk - hammered,' Dave admitted. 'I was bad as a kid, just too much. I would wake up... "Where am I?"'. He continued: 'I would wake up in the lock-up and stuff. I was never violent, I was just paralytic on the street and (would) get put in the back of a divvy van.'. Dave also revealed that he realised that he needed to change his ways just prior to Christmas 1992. Funnyman Dave Hughes (pictured has spoken out about his past battles with alcohol.
'It was November, I'd been on a bender for quite a while, and I said I would stop drinking until Christmas, so it was like six weeks, maybe,' he said. 'I had the six weeks and I got to Christmas Eve, which was always a huge night of drinking for me; get mad drunk and try to roll up to Christmas Day and it was a good tradition.'. Remaining true to his word, Dave did put down the bottle, and he hasn't looked back since.
He added that once he decided to live the life of a teetotaler, his career on stage began to take flight. 'My fortunes turned around pretty quick actually. I felt better straight away,' Dave said. 'I seemed to get on the right track and my comedy career started pretty much straight after I stopped drinking.'. Dave continued: 'I have not toasted any of my comedy successes with a drink in all that time.'.
In a 2022 interview with FARE (the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education), Dave revealed he would, in his pre-sober days, get drunk at any given opportunity. In scenes from Sunday night's I'm A Celebrity episode, Dave revealed to his fellow campmates that despite 'loving' getting drunk, he has not touched a drop in more than three decades. 'I just loved getting drunk - hammered,' Dave said. 'I was bad as a kid, just too much. I would wake up... "Where am I?"'.
'From the age of 15 to the age of 21, I would get blackout drunk on the weekends, or whenever I had the opportunity,' he confessed. 'You put yourself in such a vulnerable position. 'I used to get locked up a bit. I was never violent, but I would get found in the bloody street a mess, lying on the ground or something and I would end up in the clink.'. When it comes to being sober in social situations, Dave admitted it was tough at first, but his friends and family were very supportive.
'You do feel pressure certainly in social situations, especially when you first start to stop,' he said. People look at you weird because you're not drinking. They wonder why - but I was able to get through that.'. Dave also told Daily Mail Australia in 2020 that his uncertainty over how his mind and body would react to alcohol after years of sobriety had kept him firmly on the wagon. To illustrate this point, he recalled a conversation he had years earlier with his wife Holly Ife, who is the mother of his three children, Tess, Sadie and Rafferty.
Dave said that after putting down the bottle in 199s, his comedy career started to take off. 'My fortunes turned around pretty quick actually. I felt better straight away,' Dave said. 'I seemed to get on the right track and my comedy career started pretty much straight after I stopped drinking'. 'Holly reminded me of a conversation we'd had when we'd just started going out 17 years ago,' he said at the time.
'She apparently said to me, 'What do you think would happen if you drank again? Would you be a raging alcoholic?'. 'I replied that I didn't know, possibly not. But since I'd decided not to drink, my life had got so much better that I didn't want to risk it. 'It still holds true today, and that's why I don't drink. News that Dave was entering the jungle for the Network Ten reality show was met with a lukewarm reception from viewers.
Following his on-air debut, several posted to X to share their thoughts, with many indicating they find the stand-up 'annoying'. 'Imagine being stuck in the jungle with Dave Hughes,' commented one person while someone else wrote, 'Yuk. I don't like him'. 'Dave Hughes in the jungle is my worst nightmare. He is an absolute d****head,' said another. 'What did we do to deserve Hughsey?' one more asked while someone else commented, 'The most annoying person alive aka Dave Hughes'.
