Five men and two women have today been jailed for a total of 93 years for sexually abusing children in Scotland and warned they may never be released. The seven ring members were all convicted of gang raping a child and abusing other children in a drugs den in Glasgow where heroin and crack cocaine were used. They were given sentences of between 20 years and eight years in jail before they can apply for parole and received lifelong restriction orders.
Iain Owens, 46, Elaine Lannery, 40, Lesley Williams, 43, Paul Brannan, 42, Scott Forbes, 51, Barry Watson, 48, and John Clark, 48, were convicted in November 2023 following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow. The trial, which lasted for about eight weeks, heard evidence of systematic child sex abuse, described as "harrowing" by Lord Beckett who said it "plunges to the depths of human depravity." Here, we look at their sickening crimes after they were exposed in court.
Four members of the group - Owens, Lannery, Brannan and Williams - were found guilty of attempting to murder a baby girl by pushing her into a microwave and trapping her in other places. The victim was also forced to eat dog food and hung by her clothes from a nail, the court heard, and was chased by people wearing a devil mask, on occasions between December 2015 and June 2019.
Three child complainants made allegations that originally related to witchcraft but developed to include child sex abuse, including rape and attempted murder, the High Court in Glasgow heard. One of the children said in evidence that "two witches" held their legs down, adding: "It felt uncomfortable, all the witches and wizards were watching.".
