Dog Man fans were panting for a big screen adventure and they got it. The animated adventure based on the popular children's book series was top dog at the box office, handily beating the competition over the weekend, digging up $36 million from showings in more than 3,800 theaters across the US. Pete Davidson provided the voice for the evil Petey the cat, who declares war on the police officer who is half-man, half-dog in the film from the world of Captain Underpants.

Other Saturday Night Live alum, including Melissa Villasenor, Cheri Otari, and Lorraine Newman provided voices for the film which has received a solid 76-percent rating from the critics at Rotten Tomatoes and a CinemaScore of A, according to Variety. 'I'm a huge Dav Pilkey fan,' Davidson, 31, told CBS 'I grew up reading all the Captain Underpants books. My mom got them for me. All the young kids in my family, they all read Dog Man, they’re obsessed with Dog Man,' he said.

The animated adventure about a half-man, half-dog crime fighter raced to the top of the box office, fetching $36 million its first weekend in theaters. Coming in a distant second was newcomer Companion. Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid star in the psychological thriller about a group of friends who go for a weekend trip to a late billionaire's cabin in the woods, where they discover one of their party is a companion robot.

The dark comedy earned $9.5 million at US the box office after opening in nearly 3,300 theaters, and made another $5.5 million internationally for an debut weekend worth a total of $15 million, covering its $10 production budget. The film has received good reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a 94-percent score from the critics and a 91-percent rating from audiences.
