Experts at Battersea have shared exactly how to use a long-line lead to safeguard your dog and yourself from injury and give them more freedom. One of the joys of owning a dog is being able to take them out for walks in the fresh air. It provides them with vital exercise to keep them happy and healthy and has the added benefit of improving the physical fitness of owners too.
Before your pooch is ready to be let off the lead and scamper around any outside areas by themselves they need training to ensure they obey your command to return and don’t run off or get lost completely. Many choose to practice recall training using a long-line lead which is a long rope with a clip at the end that you can attach to your dog’s harness like you would a normal lead. It has the benefit of giving the animal more freedom and gets them used to the feeling of being off lead, while still allowing the owner some control.
Although they are a safe and effective way to train your dog, they must be used in the correct way. Experts at Battersea have revealed exactly how to use them to ensure you aren’t risking yours or your pup’s health. They say they always recommend attaching the long-line to a harness and not a collar so that if your dog runs when they’re at the very end of the line they’re less likely to hurt themselves. "If your dog’s harness has fastenings on the front and back we recommend attaching the long-line to the back fastening as this keeps it further from their feet and should help prevent them getting tangled," they advise.
