Dominique Pelicot will suffer behind bars and may not survive his 20-year sentence, crime experts tell The Mirror. Following a landmark trial in France, Pelicot has been convicted of drugging and raping his unwitting wife, Gisele Pelicot, and will be incarcerated for two decades. The former electrician, 71, led a sick campaign of abuse against the mother-of-three and invited dozens of strangers into their home to sexually abuse her as she lay unconscious.

Gisele, 72, was sedated and raped at least 200 times between 2011 and 2020. A total of 50 men, including soldiers, nurses and truck drivers, have now been convicted of aggravated rape or sexual assault. Gisele was in court to witness almost every moment of the trial, putting herself through unimaginable pain and discomfort.

But her immense bravery in waiving her right to anonymity to publicise the case will only increase his suffering in jail, according to legal and criminal experts. While she can now finally walk freely and move on with her life, Pelicot will rot in jail and may never see the light of day again. Here, we take a look at what his bleak future holds...

Criminal defence lawyer Jeffrey Reisman says Pelicot will be 'highly vulnerable' to harassment and violence in prison and may be forced to spend his time in isolation, away from the rest of the prison population, due to the heinous nature of his crimes. Mr Reisman told The Mirror: "Convicted rapists are often at a higher risk from other inmates targeting them as a result of the nature of their crime.
