Duchess of Edinburgh vows to keep 'banging drum' for women’s rights on visit to Nepal The Duchess of Edinburgh has vowed to keep “banging the drum” for women’s rights during a visit to Nepal.

After visiting Maiti Nepal, an organisation Charles sold a painting to raise funds and help them buy additional land to expand the safe home nearly 30 years ago, Sophie said her role was to stand up for those with “very little voice”.

The couple said they had been welcomed with open arms during their first visit to the country, where they joined in the royal tradition of planting trees and became the first royals to attend a Gurkha passing out parade.

Highlighting the plight of abused women around the world in recent years, the duchess said she would continue to use her position as a senior royal to highlight their suffering and campaign for change.

In an interview with UK media on their six day visit to the country, Sophie and her husband Prince Edward, both 60, also revealed the secret to their successful partnership is down to being “best friends”.
