The Department for Work and Pensions has updated its guidance for people undergoing reviews that could alter the amount of benefits they claim. This is particularly relevant for Universal Credit claimants, as three simple errors could lead to your benefits being completely halted, while other changes could increase them.

The purpose of these reviews is to ensure that people's information is current and that they are receiving the correct amount of benefits. The process involves two steps, beginning with the submission of certain documents. You'll know you're under review when you receive a message in your online journal asking for your ID and bank statements. In some instances, these may be the only documents required for the review.

In others, you may be asked to provide additional documents that can shed light on your circumstances and your potential entitlement to Universal Credit. These could include documents proving your housing costs, earnings or other income, self-employment, savings, childcare costs, children, student finance, and caring responsibilities.

Once these have been submitted, you'll be invited to a phone appointment to discuss your claim, a phone interview in essence. Following this, you'll receive a decision about your Universal Credit which could be increased, decreased, remain the same, or stopped altogether.
