A weather expert has warned that Storm Herminia and Storm Eowyn are just the start for the UK as both weather systems battered the country with 100mph winds over the weekend. British Weather Services’ Jim Dale told the Mirror that, whilst most people have listened to advice given during both storms, their ferocity and violence effectively marked a new meteorological era.

He said: “It’s just a matter of where we are at this matter in time, seeing these high impact storms coming in. It’s my expectation that we would see more. “Eowyn and Herminia are just the start of a trend of major storms that could hit the UK. We saw it very much last year. The pattern is being repeated in a slightly chaotic or repeatable way.”.

However, whilst Jim predicts the UK could see more storms of the scale of Eowyn and Herminia, he praised the public for listening to advice and staying inside, something which he said avoided more people dying. “Eowyn, I think most of the public recognised it [the danger], especially in the red warning areas did what they had to do and stayed in. If they hadn’t there would have been mass fatalities,” the weather expert said.

When it came to the UK’s preparedness for future extreme weather events, Jim had a more cautious assessment, warning that the country was not “fully prepared” because “people have not got the education of what to do when these things hit”. As a result, Jim is calling for more dialogue between the government and the public so everyone knows what to do in the event of more extreme weather incidents.
