ITV has released a first look at new thriller Protection, starring Happy Valley's Siobhan Finneran. The six-part drama has been created by White House Farm writer Kris Mrksa, and explores what happens when the clandestine and morally grey witness protection system breaks down. The series is inspired by a real-life witness protection officer, who also acted as a consultant on the show.
"Detective Inspector Liz Nyles (Finneran); a single mum, juggling a difficult divorce and a sick father, finds herself at the heart of a security breach within her witness protection unit," reads the official synopsis for the series. When her work becomes compromised by a secret affair with a colleague, Liz is determined to uncover the real source of corruption within the police force.
She will stop at nothing to redeem herself, the reputation of her lover, and to keep her witnesses and her own family safe. Even if it means breaking all the rules. "This is the story of a tough but increasingly isolated and under suspicion police officer as she is pulled into a dangerous conspiracy where nothing is as it seems," the logline concludes.
As well as Finneran, the series boasts a star-studded cast that includes Sherwood's Nadine Marshall, Bad Sisters' Barry Ward, Sex Education's Chaneil Kular and Mr Bates vs. The Post Office star Katherine Kelly. Protection has been produced by New Pictures, the multi-award-winning production company behind Des, White House Farm, The Long Shadow and Dalgliesh.
