Forgotten star compared to Lionel Messi seals shock Championship transfer on deadline day Burnley have snapped up former Tottenham academy starlet Marcus Edwards on loan from Sporting Lisbon.
Clarets head coach Scott Parker knew Edwards from his time as a Spurs player, and the connection was enough to clinch the deal for the Championship promotion hopefuls.
Born in Enfield, Edwards joined Spurs’ academy system as an eight-year-old and made his senior debut for Tottenham in an EFL Cup tie nine years ago.
Edwards was likened to Lionel Messi earlier in his career by former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, who was a huge fan of the England youth international.
Speaking back when he was in the hotseat, Pochettino said of Edwards: "His qualities, it's only looks, his body and the way that he plays, remember a little bit from the beginning of Messi.".
