Gavin and Stacey has already broken its own record with last night’s emotional finale. It’s been five years since Ness (Ruth Jones) got down on one knee to propose to Smithy (James Corden) in 2019, with fans desperate to find out what happened next ever since.

They finally got their answer last night and 12.3million people tuned in to watch the last ever episode of the BBC comedy, beating its own record set five years ago when 11.6million watched the penultimate episode live. It’s also the most watched Christmas TV episode across all channels in over a decade.

Among those watching at home were of course creators James Corden and Ruth Jones, who brought their families together on Christmas Day. The duo shared a photo on Instagram, with the caption: ‘We had to be together to watch tonight. We really hope you enjoy the finale of Gavin and Stacey.

‘It has been the greatest privilege making this show over the past 17 years. We’ll see you on BBC One at 9pm. The years go by so fast, let’s hope the next beats the last. Happy Christmas. X.’. The 2019 special went on to reach an audience of over 18million with consolidated figures on catch-up, with the final expected to go even further.

Wallace and Gromit was also a winner, with over 9million watching the latest instalment, Vengeance Most Fowl, which Metro called the ‘best’ Wallace and Gromit film so far. Gavin & Stacey 12.32m. Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl 9.38m. The King (BBC, ITV, BBC News and Sky News) 6.82m (not including other channels).
