The whisky was flowing during the Great British Bake Off New Year special, reveal Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith. It’s an all-Scottish special - with the judges raising a glass of the local tipple and donning customary tartan. Alison Hammond cheekily tried to expose whether or not Paul had gone down the traditional root and had worn his kilt without any underwear by using fans to blow it up.

“Alison was a bit naughty because she kept getting fans and trying to run behind me!” laughed Paul, 58. Paul teased: “I wore it as I was expected to wear it.” Sources say he didn't go commando though. The Bake Off judge discovered his Scottish Highland roots on Who Do You Think You Are? and wore his family tartan with pride. “I got my kilt out, my McKenzie Kilt," he told. "The full works.” So did Prue, who explained: “There are two Leith tartans, actually one is the Port of Leith because the Port of Edinburgh is called Leith and the other is a family tartan from Aberdeen - that’s my tartan.”.

In the Hogmanay special, Prue, 84, admits she got into the party mood during filming with a few drams off whisky. “There was quite a lot of whisky, yes,” confessed Prue. “Most of it, I was drinking! You know if someone offers me a drink, it’s rude to refuse, isn’t it? And quite a lot of the bakers put a wee dram on the side.“.

But she and Paul both admitted they’d be unlikely to see the New Year in as they can’t stay up until midnight. Prue said: “I was married to my first husband, Rayne, for 25 years and John, I’ve been with for about 15. They both agree with me, the place to be on New Year’s Eve is fast asleep under the duvet.”.
