A children's fairground ride came off its rails leading to panic as 12 people were left injured. Emergency services rushed to the scene in Guatemala and treated four children as well as eight adults - including a pregnant woman who were hurt when the cars on the ride came loose and one flipped over. Footage shows injured riders being stretchered away from the collapsed ride and police have launched an investigation into what happened.
The injured people were on a children's attraction called the Gusanito, roughly translated as a Caterpillar Ride, when the accident took place in the town of San Pedro Pinula, east of Guatemala City, on Saturday. There were many people at the fairground as locals celebrated their saint's day. The victims were treated at the scene before several were taken to a nearby private hospital for further medical care. A fire department spokesperson said: "Fortunately, these people did not suffer any serious injuries that could threaten their lives.".
The injured were identified as Adrian Mendez, 26, Mayra Perez, 19, Keily Gomez, 13, Katherin Aguilar, 12, and Jose Aguilar, 10. Three others were later named as Glendy Mateo Gomez, Josefina Gomez, and Santos Gomez and the identities of the other four victims have not yet been released. The fire brigade said Mayra Perez is five months pregnant, as reported by NeedToKnow. An investigation into the cause of the collapse is ongoing. One local said: "The authorities should monitor such rides to make sure they comply with all the necessary safety measures.".
Vinicio said: "Thank goodness they were only injured, in other municipalities like Jutiapa it's common to see deaths at fairs." Angel added: "There needs to be an in-depth investigation into this accident.". Meanwhile, a ride "collapsed" at a Christmas fairground in Birmingham, leaving "a small number of people" injured, police confirmed. Birmingham Police said officers rushed to Centenary Square on December 12 following reports of an issue with the Star Flyer ride. Images shared online showed seats tangled on the ride and police confirmed "a small number" of people were treated by paramedics at the scene. Two people were taken to the hospital after the incident.
The police force urged people to stay away from the area, as it added in a statement: "We currently have officers in Centenary Square, #Birmingham following reports of an issue with one of the rides. A small number of people are being treated at the scene by paramedics, but no serious injuries have been reported. "Centenary Square remains cordoned off this evening while we support our emergency service colleagues. Please avoid the area." The West Midlands Fire Service confirmed they also responded to the incident at around 9.30pm this evening. It said the ride "failed and crashed", dropping to ground level while in operation.
