Eight people - including two teenage girls - have been dashed to hospital after the balcony on which they were dining collapsed. The timber platform smashed 2.5metres to the ground at the family home in Anglesea in Victoria, Australia as they group tucked into their lunch.

A police spokesperson said: "Three men, three women and two teenage girls were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries." It is reported by Mail Online the family dog was caught up in the ordeal and also requires treatment. Firefighters have cordoned off the area and a building surveyor is set to attend the scene to examine the structural damage, local media says. At least three fire engines are understood to be present.

A spokesperson for the country's State Emergency Service (SES) said: "SES along with ambulance crews and the CFA (Country Fire Authority) helped to extricate the people trapped underneath."
