Several guests at a combined birthday party and funeral were injured when a huge brawl broke out, in which some got stamped on the head. Police were called to Winston Conservative Club in Baguley, Greater Manchester, on November 4 following reports of several people fighting. Four men were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from a broken ankle, to a fractured cheek and a bleed on the brain.
Earlier attendees at the club, which hosted a birthday party and a funeral, had been thrown out owing to “extensive damage” to the club’s toilets, sparking an altercation. Bystanders tried to intervene, leading to a 'larger scale fight'. Club bosses were called to a summary review at Manchester council to discuss changes to licensing conditions, the MEN reported.
PC Alan Isherwood asked for the club to have a trained security guard present at events with more than 40 people and for better CCTV. He told the meeting: “Surely having someone employed who's trained to deal with conflict resolution and defence tactics would be better if this horrible situation arose again, instead of your daughter or any other member of staff having to place themselves in danger.”.
PC Isherwood Colette Renton, a spokesperson for the club, argued hiring £25-an-hour security would be 'prohibitively expensive'. She argued the conditions were 'disproportionate' and that the incident was a 'very unfortunate freak incident'. She added: “To add this to the conditions of the club because of one night in the history of the club - to have such a prohibitively expensive condition - is setting them up to fail.
