One of the biggest decisions parents will make for their children is deciding what their names should be. A lot of parents want their child to have a unique and rememberable name without the risk of the moniker affecting them badly in the future. After all, a name can affect how a person is perceived, so it’s important to choose something that’ll suit them from infancy to adulthood. When making a decision, some parents’ most important consideration is the “uniqueness” of the name. This can result in some children being blessed with wonderfully creative names, but it can also lead to parents make up rather unusual names just for the sake of being different.
Rydel Funk is a TikTok and Instagram influencer who shares her life of being a mum to her four children, as well as being keyboardist for the popular band R5 which also stars three of her brothers. She recently gave birth to her fourth child, a daughter, on 27 January 2025. While Rydel and her husband Capron Funk have previously received criticism for their choice of names for their three previous children, named Super, Sweetie, and Storm, the couple have now revealed the highly-anticipated name for their fourth baby, and fans aren't impressed.
Taking to Instagram, Rydel shared a photo of her baby girl, who weighed an impressive 8.8lbs at birth, as she announced her name to be Sugar Lover Funk, which had a sentimental meaning for Rydel. She explained in the Instagram post: "Sugar Lover Girl is what my daddy has called me my entire life, so basically he named her haha passing on my nickname to my baby Sugar!". Some people were quick to share their excitment for Rydel and Capron, and praising their choice of name, with one user saying: "OMMGGGG LIL SUGAR FUNK! Thats actually sooo cute!!".
Another user added: "What a gorgeous little Sugar Plum!!!" while a third user said: "I was expecting sunny, but sugar is really cute too.". However others expressed their criticism for the chosen name, saying it sounded more like a name to give a pet rather than a human. One person commented: "If that's not an exotic dancer name I don't know what it.". Another person wrote: "The fact that two adult human beings AGREED on this name is baffling to me.," while a third user said: "Those poor kids. Such unfortunate names.".
