While vitamins, minerals, and supplements may appear to be an easy way to improve your health, one medical professional is sounding the alarm on the dangers of a particular vitamin if taken without proper care. Dr Carlos Andres Zapata, a nutrition expert with a significant online following, dishes out frank and informed health advice under his alias Cazamed on TikTok.
As reported by La Vanguardia, a Spanish daily newspaper, in one of his recent videos, Dr Zapata zeroes in on the potential risks associated with taking omega-3 supplements daily without a doctors guidance. Despite the popular supplement's numerous benefits, including lowering blood pressure and potentially safeguarding against dementia, there's a risk involved.
The expert captioned his TikTok video: "The risks of using omega-3 supplements chronically without proper medical advice." In the video, Dr Carlos cautioned viewers to exercise caution, as he's noticed many individuals taking omega-3 supplements without first consulting their GP.
He highlighted: "Taking omega-3 supplements on a chronic basis without medical advice has been associated with two major risks: the first, without any doubt, is atrial fibrillation.". This condition is characterised by an irregular heart rhythm that can produce blood clots. The irregular rhythm could then propel these clots to various parts of the body, triggering different health problems depending on their destination - including severe issues like strokes if they reach the brain.
The doctor highlighted an additional hazard, stating: "The second associated risk is increased bleeding." This issue can compound the problems brought on by atrial fibrillation while also heightening the danger of blood clot-related health conditions.
