One visitor to a stunning village off the beaten track in Spain has described it as "unforgettable" and like being in "heaven". One of the most popular destinations for British tourists has for some time been Spain. Millions of visitors flock to the country to soak up its rich cultural history, take in the incredible landscape and relax on the numerous white sand beaches.
The country’s vibrant night life, delicious cuisine, long hot summers and mild winters are also a huge draw for those wanting to escape everyday life and live it up. However there are parts of Spain that remain relatively untouched by mass tourism but that still have so much to offer the more adventurous and discerning traveller.
The vast inland region of Aragón in northeast Spain has some of the least populated areas in the country. You can go skiing in the Pyrenees, go on hiking tours to experience the breathtaking landscape or discover the medieval and Romanesque heritage at archaeological sites and monuments.
There are also many beautiful villages to visit in the area, including Albarracín. It sits on a hilltop surrounded by the Gualalaviar river and red sandstone boulders and cliffs. It was given National Monument status in 1961 and is regularly voted the most beautiful village in Spain. The buildings that line the steep streets have a rose gold hue and according to the Telegraph there are plenty of restaurants and boutique hotels for visitors to experience the local cuisine and relax after an energetic day exploring the steep streets in the village or walking the town’s walls.
