One visitor branded their trip to a seaside village in the UK’s least populated county "truly exceptional". There are many seaside resorts along the miles of British coastline to visit. There's a staycation or day trip with something to suit all tastes. Whether you’re looking for the quaint and traditional with fish and chips and amusement arcades or want something more chic and sophisticated with trendy bars and restaurants, there’s something for everyone. However there aren’t many spots that are consistently named as the best place to visit.

Bamburgh is that place thanks to its stunning landscape, breathtaking beach and serenity. Situated in the heart of Northumberland, which is the least populated county in the country, the village is a favourite with visitors all-year-round. In 2024 it retained its title as the UK’s best seaside destination for the fourth year running. In a survey of 4,700 people by consumer group Which? it beat Portmeirion in Gwynedd and St Andrews in Fife to the top spot. Respondents described the beach as "magnificent" and "unspoiled" and gave the village five stars for its peace and quiet, and five for its location.

Bamburgh was also listed as one of the best seaside places to live by restless.co.uk. It noted its remote location in "England’s last great wilderness" as a huge draw for those seeking solitude away from the chaos of city life. It said: "Surrounded by windswept beaches and beautiful moorland, the picturesque village is enchanting - boasting cosy pubs and cafes tucked away down side streets, old, snug cottages, and grand houses backing onto vast greens.".
