Israel has agreed on a ceasefire in Gaza 466 days after launching a full-scale war against Hamas. Qatar’s prime minister announced the pause in Israel’s bombardment will begin on January 19, adding that his country, Egypt and the US will work to ensure all sides follow through with their commitments.

It comes as Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said that the final details of the deal with Hamas were still being sorted out. US president Joe Biden outlined how the ceasefire will work in the coming weeks and months, adding that this has been ‘one of the toughest negotiations I have ever faced.’.

During phase one of the deal, which will last six weeks and include a ‘full and complete ceasefire,’ Israeli forces will withdraw from populated areas of Gaza. A number of hostages will be released, including women, older adults and wounded people, in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinians held captive in Israel. Humanitarian assistance would surge, with hundreds of trucks entering Gaza each day.

In phase two, Israel and Hamas will negotiate the necessary arrangements for what would be the permanent end to the war. It will include the release of all remaining living hostages, including male soldiers. Israeli forces would withdraw from Gaza. If negotiations take longer than six weeks, the ceasefire will continue, the US president added.
