Miss Austen, the riveting new four-part BBC drama series, delves into the life of Jane Austen, portrayed by Patsy Ferran. Unlike the numerous adaptations of the renowned author's works, Miss Austen aims to illuminate Jane and her family. The show is inspired by Gill Hornby's 2020 novel of the same name and boasts a powerful female cast, including Keeley Hawes, Rose Leslie, Jessica Hynes, and Mirren Mack. Hynes, 52, plays Mary Austen, Jane and Cassandra's (Hawes) sister-in-law, who aspires to assist her husband in publishing a biography about the esteemed writer, much to her sister's dismay.
At a recent press Q&A, Hynes revealed why she had previously steered clear of the Pride and Prejudice author, reports the Express. She stated: "There are few great adaptations of Austen, there are also some that aren't so good.". "I like to think of all of them, Jane Austen herself would find this [Miss Austen] the most interesting and most faithful and most heartfelt exploration of her life and most respectful, I think.
"Just due to the sensitivity and intelligence of the characters and the story and the fact as well that they're not really making her work. Everything is original, original stories come from her, inspired by her.". "I think also why people love Jane Austen, which I've only come to through this job - because I was slightly put off by the lesser good adaptations.
