And political animosities were shown when Karen the wife of Trump’s former vice president Mike Pence, refused to shake the newly elected president’s hand and that of his wife Melania.
Carter, who considered himself an outsider even as he sat in the Oval Office as the 39th US president, was honoured with the pageantry of a funeral at Washington National Cathedral before a second service and burial in his tiny Georgia hometown.
While Mike Pence did get up and shake Trump’s hand as he passed by, Karen Pence remained seated and looked the other way.
The first speaker was Joshua Carter, the former president's grandson, who recalled how Carter regularly taught Sunday school after leaving the White House.
