Debbie Harry is not only the epitome of cool, but she’s also a testament to the fact that maybe a healthy lifestyle isn’t a necessity for aging gracefully. After years spent partying with Andy Warhol and the factory crew, a battle with a heroin addiction, and a general rock and roll lifestyle that would have left most of us looking like a swamp witch who’s never heard of retinol, the 79-year-old lead singer of Blondie remains arrestingly beautiful.
She’s also as sharp as ever, which was made evident by a recent interview with The Times in which she discussed her upcoming 80th birthday and her dating life – all with her trademark acerbic sense of humour. She told the publication: ‘I don’t walk around thinking every minute, ‘Oh God, I’m going be 80’ – but that’s sort of how I feel.’.
She continued: “My mother used to say in her head she was 25 and I’m the same. But thinking about it all the time could be your downfall. And I don’t really want the same kind of life I did when I was younger.’. She quickly reconsidered this stance as she spoke, wondering if maybe having lived a life as exciting and broad as hers was in the past is just an excuse for taking things slow now: ‘Should I go out and party every night?’.
Things got juicier when Harry began discussing her love life, revealing that she’s not in a relationship: ‘No! God forbid! I’m terrified. No, I’m kidding, but I don’t think [being in a relationship] is possible. Do you?’. It’s understandable Harry is hesitant about romance, given that she was in a relationship with Blondie co-founder Chris Stein for 13 years, from the late 1970s until the mid-1980s.
