Kaiser Chiefs star Nick Hodgson was left "disappointed" after a blow from Liam Gallagher. Nick who played drums, backing vocals and lead vocals for the Chiefs between 1996 and 2012 has since launched his own band, Everyone Says Hi, with their debut album out on Friday. But one track on the album was written specifically with Liam in mind. Having almost three decades of song writing experience behind him, Nick has worked with everybody from Dua Lipa to Mark Ronson.
But the song, On The Same Side, was not originally supposed to be on the self-titled record and was instead written especially for Liam Gallagher. For the record, Nick teamed up with Justin Parker, who has written for Lana Del Rey. However, Liam didn't take the track and instead, Nick has completely reworked it after getting himself into a new space with the track. "It was disappointing," he said of Liam rejecting the track. Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, Nick, 47, went on to add: "We couldn't believe it. I wrote this track with Justin, he asked me to write this song with him. He co-wrote Video Games with Lana, lots of other great songs.
"We wrote this song together, we were convinced he was going to sing it, it was going to be great. I think it was because I was in the Kaiser Chiefs, he didn't want songs written by the Kaiser Chiefs, which was very disappointing because it really suited him." Nick went on to add that due to being an "indie kid at heart," Oasis was massively important for him. "I can speak Oasis, when I'm songwriting, if I'm writing for Liam, I really could find myself getting in that space," he said, adding: "It sat around for a few years. I loved it, I knew no one was ever going to do it – it was so specifically for him that anyone else couldn't do it." After the rejection, Nick messed around with the key of the track, which often worked but other times, it didn't.
"It was really hard to sing, he explained, before continuing: "I don't know why it's so hard to sing – it's not now, I got used to it, practised a lot and played it with the band, it's just great." But aside from writing for Liam, Nick has written for likes of Dua Lipa and The Vamps to name a few. Speaking of his new band, Nick said: "The first time I played music together with other people, was with my friend and his dad, we were about eight-years-old, we played The Lion Sleeps tonight. I've been in bands forever." He revealed that after leaving the Chiefs, he also joined a band with his wife due to his love of being in bands.
"If you find the right people, it's brilliant, there's nothing like it," Nick said, before explaining that having worked on a solo record, he missed being in a collaborative workspace. "I'd always write songs, when you play it with other people, then you can really hear where it can get to." He said: "It can bring out the best in yourself, you could be having all of the ideas but it's because there's a few other people there – it might be the case that when there's other people there, you might want to show off and try and impress.".
Reflecting on the release of the album, Nick revealed: "I'm very excited, it's been a long time, I can't remember what it's like to put records out – it's going to be good. Five songs have come out from the album, so I think when peopel hear the rest of it put together, I think I'm looking forward to hearing what people say.". But he also revealed that there will be a tour coming up ahead of festival season later this year. "Getting some festivals and probably touring," he said, adding: "The short answer is yes [there will be a tour] but the long answer is, there are details that need to be ironed out.".
