Dua Lipa ensured she would become a huge musician – even before she signed a record deal. Aged just 15, Dua moved to her hometown of London after her family had previously returned to Kosovo, where her dad was a singer in a band. But Dua was determined to make it on her own and headed to Camden, where she grew up, shairng a flat with a family friend before studying at the Sylvia Young Theatre School part time.
It was then that the Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter started uploading cover songs including Beautiful by Christina Aguilera to her YouTube and Soundcloud pages. But before signing a record deal, Dua started working with local producers and songwriters, which was recently documented in the Disney+ documentary, Camden.
One of those was ex-Kaiser Chief's drummer and songwriter, Nick Hodgson, who knew the 29-year-old before she was catapulted to global fame. Now, Nick, 47, who fronts the band Everyone Says Hi, has spoken of his experience about working with Dua and how he instantly saw a spark behind her eyes.
"Dua Lipa was really good," Nick exclusively told the Mirror during a chat from his studio. He went on to add: "I'd written with quite a few people at this point. When she came in, I had this studio in Shoreditch, in a basement, me and my friend Jez, he'd written a song with her before.
"We did a few sessions with her and you could just tell straight away that she was a star. She didn't have a record deal the first time we worked with her but then she got signed when we were working with her." But Dua appeared to be determined to make a name for herself and ensured that those passing by her in the streets knew her name.
