The golden sand on the beach at a picturesque resort in Gran Canaria was imported from the Sahara and it seems to have brought the searing heat with it too. Many people choose to chance their luck on finding some much-needed sun in some of Europe’s warmest locations during the winter. Of course the weather is never guaranteed if you take a holiday in this part of the world during the colder months but it will probably be much milder than a British winter.
Places such as Malta and Greek islands like Crete and Rhodes are generally warm as are the southern coasts of Portugal and Spain. The Canary islands are famed for their year-round sunshine and mild temperatures and it was in Gran Canaria that the highest ever December temperature in Spain was recorded recently.
According to Canarian Weekly, the weather station at Puerto de Mogán in the south of Gran Canaria, recorded a temperature of 25.9C on 16 December 2024. The figure was released by the Spanish Meteorological Agency AEMET which monitors weather for forecasts and warnings.
Puerto de Mogán is a small fishing village that sits at the foot of a cliff on the southwest coast of Gran Canaria. The original resort was built in the 1980s and the canals and bridges over the seawater inlet has led it to be dubbed ‘Little Venice’. A charming new marina was built out from the existing shoreline and fishing harbour where you can take boat trips from for a spot of fishing or dolphin spotting.
The golden sand on the south-facing beach was imported from the Sahara and the water in the bay is protected by a breakwater which makes it ideal for families with children and anyone wanting to have a gentle, safe swim in the sea. There’s plenty of amenities on the beach such as sunbeds and parasols and jet skis and pedalos are available for hire.
