Locals in a crime-riddled British town say they fear for their safety with youths seen throwing things at shoppers and hurling bricks through windows. Residents in Blackwood, Caephilly, say the town is becoming a "no go zone" amidst rising crime and anti-social behaviour. Among the problems blighting locals are teenagers harassing the elderly and intimidating people at bus stops, while reports of youths carrying knives have become increasingly common.
In one terrifying incident, a teenager was reportedly chased by another with a knife, hiding at a family friend's home in terror. Locals held a meeting to address the mounting crime levels - which was in turn disrupted by youths. Blackwood town council convened on Tuesday evening to address these severe public disturbances, Bristol Live reports. However, a group of teenagers in fact entered that meeting, disrupting it and remaining inside the town council building, causing mayhem until the police arrived and dispersed the troublemakers.
Residents and local business owners spoke of the misery inflicted on the community - may doing so under the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation. One trader at a furniture shop which recently had a brick thrown at it asked to remain nameless, saying: "I value my windows too much.".
Local gym employee Ewan Thayer said unruly teenagers once broke into the gym, spraying a can of aerosol in members' faces. "It's intimidating for older members especially. It's a real issue," he said. "Sometimes there are 20 of them. Two weeks ago five of them came in running around in here and then locked themselves in the disabled toilets. They were drinking alcohol. I've got it all on camera.".
