The former British Olympian, 54, seems the picture of health, but took to social media yesterday with a worrying update after she was told something by a doctor that’s ‘not exactly what you want to hear’.
Dame Kelly visited a gynaecologist after having a ‘casual’ chat with Dr Naomi Potter – who co-authored Menopausing with Davina McCall and hosts Midweek Menopause Madness with Lisa Snowdon. The gold medalist wrote the news on top of an Instagram Story of her walking in a cap and fluffy grey jumper. ‘What a day! When you go to see a gynaecologist and it’s not exactly what you want to hear,’ she wrote, adding: ‘More to come but only when I have the outcome. All I can say is I am glad for casual chat with @dr_naomipotter.’.
Dr Potter is a British Menopause Society accredited specialist doctor. Gynaecologists diagnose and treat issues with female reproductive organs. This comes after Dame Kelly wrote an article for Metro about her relationship with running after retirement, and how going from structured environments of the Army and Olympic training to total freedom left her mental health in tatters. ‘I had already had a breakdown in 2003, and then after retiring I felt so low and depressed. I wasn’t sure who I was any more and what my purpose was,’ she wrote.
Dame Kelly also touched on going through perimenopause – the hormonal change that happens before menopause. ‘I noticed as I was getting older and started going through the perimenopause I was getting more aches and pains,’ she said, before crediting Parkruns for helping her stay fit mentally and physically. Last year Dame Kelly revealed to The Telegraph how she felt about ageing. She said: ‘I don’t like it. I’m someone who used to have a six pack. I still have one, but there are a couple more layers than I’d like over it now.’.
Dame Kelly – who won two gold medals at the Athens Olympics in 2004 – also said she still feels ‘relatively fit’. What I Own: I quit London at 48 and bought my first home in Sussex for £325,000. Londoners are flocking to this ‘bustling’ neighbourhood 10 miles from the centre. What I Own: I bought my £820,000 Nine Elms flat through a little-known saving scheme. If you live at this house number, your property could be 'cursed'.
We moved into a beautiful floating lakehouse and only pay £2,210 a year in 'rent'. ‘I feel relatively fit. I’d always like to be fitter,’ she said, adding: ‘In some ways I’m healthier than when I was an athlete, but not as fast. I wouldn’t be able to sprint like I did before. I’d just break down.’.
