Luke Littler has revealed that he was sent a congratulatory message by David Beckham after winning the World Darts Championship. Littler hammered Michael Van Gerwen in Friday's final to lift the Sid Waddell Trophy for the first time. He is the youngest player in darts history to be crowned world champion, at the age of just 17. He went 4-0 up over Van Gerwen, before fending off a fightback from the Dutchman to win 7-3. As well as becoming a darting superstar, Littler has become one of Manchester United's best-known fans.
He visited the club's Carrington training ground last season and now appears to have become close with one of United's legends. Littler has disclosed that he exchanged messages with Beckham following his win. Littler told Sky Sports: "He said 'Wow, well done'. I said 'Thank you'. Goes to show how well I've done for the sport. Not only for myself but the other hundreds of professionals out there. But to see the likes of David Beckham watching, it feels crazy.".
Following his win, Littler is now basking in the glory of becoming world champion. He revealed that he had studied his performance in last year's World Championship final defeat to Luke Humphries ahead of taking on Van Gerwen. "I've learned a lot. Last year in the semi-finals against Rob Cross, that was the first time I was 1-0 down, then obviously against Luke," Littler said. "No one will know this but earlier today I watched all of the game back against Luke and I had the visions.
