Luke Littler's early form in the PDC World Darts Championship final didn't go unnoticed by fans, many of whom were blown away by the teenager's quality. Littler, 17, was aiming to go one better than his run to the final in January 2024. He was also going after Van Gerwen's record for the youngest ever world champion, with the Dutchman claiming the title at the age of 24 back in 2014.

Van Gerwen had a few shaky moments early on and his opponent took full advantage. Littler raced into a four set lead in almost no time, nailing double after double as he looked to put the contest out of sight. The teenage sensation captured the imagination of fans during his fairytale run last year, when Luke Humphries ultimately denied him the title. And he showed no signs of slowing down this time around.

"Luke Littler is taking the utter p***," one fan wrote on social media. "Littler isn't just pulling MvG's pants down, he's setting them on fire," was the reaction from another.

Others noticed a favoured double from the teenager. "Is the key to happiness finding something in life you love as much as Luke Littler loves finishing on double 10," one said, with another simply said: "Death, taxes and Luke Littler ending on a double 10.".

Van Gerwen was the man who has been there and done it before, but you could have been forgiven for thinking Littler was the seasoned pro. "He's [Van Gerwen] completely just not at the races at all," one said. "Plays like he's in his prime against [Callan] Rydz and then this.".
