Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim studying Sir Alex Ferguson footage ahead of FA Cup clash vs Arsenal

Ruben Amorim has been watching film footage of the Sir Alex Ferguson years - so the Manchester United boss goes into his first FA Cup tie fully aware of how the famous old competition saved the club’s most successful manager from the sack. “Maybe I will need that in the future, I don’t know,” joked the Portuguese ahead of United’s third-round trip to Arsenal. Someone might want to tell him that Louis van Gaal was relieved of his duties just 24 hours after lifting the trophy in 2016, while Erik ten Hag’s victory over Manchester City in last season’s final only bought the Dutchman a stay of execution.
But Amorim is well aware that winning is a habit. At both Braga and Sporting Lisbon he lifted the Taca de Liga. A Mark Robins goal in the third round at Nottingham Forest in 1990 bought Ferguson time - and his near-four-year wait for his first United trophy came to an end four months later.
United then lifted the European Cup Winners Cup and League Cup in subsequent seasons before winning the first of their 13 Premier League titles in 1993. Amorim said: “It’s about the feeling of winning. That feeling can give you so much confidence. If you win one thing then you believe you can win more.
“That feeling is addictive. You feel it and then it’s really easy to follow that by trying to win again. I know that story (of Ferguson). I think he saved his job, not by winning the Cup but by beating a strong opponent in an earlier round. “They (the fans) were saying ‘Fergie out’ - and then they won that game and then reached the final and won it. “I know that. I think it’s important for the future for the confidence of the players.”.
