Manchester United fans got their first sight of Patrick Dorgu when the Dane was paraded on the pitch before kick-off following his £25million capture from Lecce. Dorgu, who was accompanied by fellow new boy Ayden Heaven, clearly isn’t superstitious because he posed with his No.13 jersey. But he’s going to need all the luck he can get because while the left wing-back is the first piece in Ruben Amorim’s jigsaw, it’s hard to see many more fitting into place.

Signing a striker will be Amorim’s biggest challenge this summer when he will have much more money to spend. He went with Kobbie Mainoo against away-day specialists Crystal Palace, with Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho providing little support down the wings. Amorim left Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee on the bench until the 70th minute, when United trailed 1-0. He is exasperated with them because Hojlund has not scored in nearly two months, while Zirkzee has just four goals and neither had a sniff against Palace.

Amorim sees no future for Marcus Rashford and is offloading the former England striker to Aston Villa, leaving a large hole in his attack where a centre-forward should be. He would love Viktor Gyokeres and his gentleman’s agreement not to sign anyone from his old club Sporting Lisbon expires this window. United are weak all over the pitch and question marks remain over Andre Onana after he was beaten too easily for the first of Jean-Philippe Mateta’s goals. United’s back three of Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez are as watertight as a colander and are failing in their primary function.

Dorgu’s arrival is needed because Diogo Dalot had a nightmare and neither of United’s wing-backs, so crucial in Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation, offered anything going forward. Amorim faces a Herculean effort to complete this puzzle, especially when so many pieces are missing.
