Manchester United's players asked for a day off following their win over Fulham, but were told no by Ruben Amorim. The result saw the Red Devils climb to 12th in the table, with Lisandro Martinez's deflected effort from outside the box the only goal in a scrappy encounter at Craven Cottage on Sunday. Amorim celebrated his 40th birthday on Monday, and will no doubt have treated the three points like an early birthday present.

But he evidently wasn't prepared to do any gift-giving himself. Speaking to MUTV after the game, the United manager revealed: "They [the players] asked for a day off tomorrow. I didn't give it.". In February last year, the squad tried to pull the same stunt with Erik ten Hag, coincidentally after a defeat to Fulham. But like his successor, Ten Hag rejected their request.

At that time, United had won four Premier League games on the bounce, with Fulham being their first defeat of 2024. Nevertheless, Ten Hag was in no mood to reward the players after a loss. Amorim, on the other hand, is presumably keen to keep the foot on the gas after United registered their second win of the week following their 2-1 victory over Rangers in the Europa League. It's the first time they've clinched back-to-back wins in all competitions since mid-December, and just the third occasion they've done so all season.

"We need to work to improve all the players," Amorim added, before explaining what he had planned for his birthday. "It will be a fantastic day because we won and I'm going to do what I love in our club," he said. "Then, in the end, I will have dinner with my kids.".
