A cold weather health alert is in place across most of England for the next four days. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a yellow alert for all areas of the country apart from the south west, running from today until Tuesday. This is the lowest of three warnings and suggests the cold weather could impact the most vulnerable people in our communities, but the general population should be okay.
Temperatures are expected to drop to -1°C at night in some parts of the north east tomorrow and 1°C in the north, midlands and the east. London and the south will drop to around 2°C. Day-time temperatures will be somewhat milder reaching around 5°C or 6°C in much of the country over the next couple of days and peaking at around 7°C on Monday.
Although chilly at night, the temperatures are significantly milder than earlier this month when snow caused chaos across much of northern England. The UKHSA weather health alert system, which is run in partnership with the Met Office, is largely in place to provide early warning to the health and social care sector.
It’s hoped they can then ensure vulnerable people such as the elderly and those with certain conditions are warm enough and be prepared for a higher number of call outs. But it is also a warning to others, for example anyone struggling to pay their bills, to reach out for help if they need it.
