A mobility scooter rider doing 8mph on a busy main road managed to give police the slip, leaving other motorists baffled. People were stunned as a man pootled along on the electric buggy. Despite drivers beeping their horns and shouting for the man to get off the road he continued travelling causing lengthy tailbacks.
Police were inundated with 999 calls from concerned motorists on the A14. The scooter driver entered the eastbound carriageway at junction 4 of the A14 at Rothwell, close to Kettering, Northants and carried on for around three miles. Police caught-up with the scooter as it left at junction seven. But the man refused to stop, instead turning around and travelling in the opposite direction against the flow of traffic. Officers were unable to follow for safety reasons and the rider then made-off before they could catch-up with him again.
A spokesperson for Northants Police said: "Behaviour like this risks the safety of everyone. If you witness someone doing this, please call 999 immediately." Officers are appealing for anyone with information or dash-cam footage to contact them. Witnesses were stunned as reported by What's The Jam. One said: "He was going from one lane to the other on his mobility scooter. "He got to junction seven on the A14. The police tried to stop him. But he did a U-turn and drove towards oncoming traffic.
"It was very crazy. He brought lorries to a standstill. He was on the A14 for about half an hour." Another added: "I saw him and I could see the queue of traffic. I was heading in the other direction and wondered what was going on and couldn't believe it when I saw it was someone on a mobility scooter. Crazy when there is a pathway he could be using alongside that stretch of busy road.".
