Monty Don has revealed the best vegetables to plant this season as much of the UK braces for sub-zero temperatures and snow. The BBC Gardeners' World host, 69, shared his top tips for optimum vegetable growth this spring - and the trick lies in sowing a variety of seeds during the colder months.
Writing on his website, Monty Don picked broad beans, chillies, onions, and rocket as some of his favourite vegetables to grow during the colder months of January and February. He explained: 'In the vegetable garden, I dig and - if the soil is dry enough - sow broad beans and plant onion sets.
'If the ground is at all workable (not frozen), then I always try and sow some broad beans in February for an early crop. The horticulturalist recommended sowing the bean seeds around eight inches apart in double rows, with approximately a foot or two between the lines and plenty of space - ideally about three feet - between each double row.
Monty also suggested using either the Aquadulce or Witkiem varieties for best results. Meanwhile, the BBC star also advised gardeners to grow onions from sets, which are small bulbs. He added: 'If the ground is dry enough, these can be planted now - about nine inches apart in rows with the tips sticking out of the soil. 'However if it is too wet, I suggest planting a batch in plugs in ordinary peat-free compost and protecting them in a greenhouse or cool windowsill where they will establish shoots and roots.'.
