M&S is testing major change to make checking out so much quicker

Marks & Spencer is testing out new smart checkouts in an effort to provide a faster and more seamless in-store shopping experience for customers. In what will be a major change for shoppers, checkouts will allow them to simply place their baskets on a till and receive their bill without the need to scan products.
The trial is currently underway in the clothing and home departments of an M&S branch in Woking, Surrey. If successful, smart scanners will be installed in other branches across the UK. These new tills automatically identify items by reading chips embedded in price tags, meaning shoppers will not be required to physically scan each product the way they have been used to in the past.
Prices are then totalled up and customers will be prompted to pay after receiving their bill. A select number of retailers across the UK are currently using smart tills, including fashion retailer Uniqlo, to free members of staff up so they can focus on helping customers.
M&S has reported significant changes in speed and efficiency since the trial began, noting a 40 per cent reduction in transaction times compared to regular self-checkout tills. Speaking to The Sun, a spokesperson for M&S said: 'We help customers to shop when, where and how they want by providing a choice of manned checkouts and self-service tills and we always offer customers the option to shop and pay with a colleague's help.'.
