Myles Lewis-Skelly dressing room reaction to red card revealed after Arsenal beat Wolves

Riccardo Calafiori has revealed that Myles Lewis-Skelly was ‘disappointed for the team’ over his controversial red card in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Wolves on Saturday. Mikel Arteta’s side were reduced to 10 men in the first half after Lewis-Skelly was given a straight red card by referee Michael Oliver for a trip on Matt Doherty.
On initial viewing, Lewis-Skelly’s foul appeared to be a cynical trip on Doherty which warranted a yellow card, however, Oliver deemed the challenge ‘serious foul play’ which warranted a red card. Arsenal were furious with the decision, meanwhile, Calafiori has revealed Lewis-Skelly’s reaction in the dressing room following his dismissal.
Asked if he felt it was a red card, Calafiori replied: ‘From the bench it was clearly not a red card. ‘But I saw him at half time, he was so disappointed for the team. ‘But in the end we won, so nothing happened.’. Calafiori scored Arsenal’s winning goal with 16 minutes remaining to keep the Gunners six points behind Liverpool, who still have a game in hand after their 4-1 win at home to Ipswich Town on Saturday.
Wolves also had Joao Gomes sent off for a second yellow in the 70th minute, although replays showed that the 23-year-old caught Jurrien Timber at a similar angle to Lewis-Skelly’s challenge on Doherty. Lewis-Skelly, meanwhile, faces a three game ban unless the red card is overturned, meaning he will miss Premier League games against Manchester City and Leicester City, as well as the Carabao Cup semi final second leg against Newcastle United on February 5.
