The age-old mystery of the Loch Ness Monster has slithered back into life with the news that an unusual 20-foot-long object has been spotted in the huge lake’s chilly waters. The object was captured on a 24/7 webcam near the shore at the Loch’s southwestern end. Images from the webcam show a long dark object half-submerged in the Loch, apparently heading towards Cherry Island.

A report of the potential monster sighting said: "The object – whatever it was – was captured on the Shoreland lodges webcam. "The object was moving close to shore towards Cherry Island direction before turning and heading further out into the Loch before disappearing out of sight.".

Nessie enthusiasts were thrilled by the sighting. Longtime Nessie enthusiast Michael Alberty, posting on the official Loch Ness exploration Facebook page, said that the mysterious images definitely qualified as a potential sighting, adding: "Can't wait to see how this turns out.".

Bill Thompson added: "Close to shore but it looks pretty big. Twenty feet maybe? Any way to estimate the size?". Nessie spotter Col Veacock said that the mysterious object, which was spotted shortly before 5pm on Sunday, January 5 “looks amazing if real”.

However, one sceptical local offered a possible explanation for the sighting that doesn’t require the presence of a family of prehistoric creatures living in the nation’s largest lake. Elly Russell said: "The recent storms have brought hundreds of big chunks of wood to the Loch.
