Alexander Isak continued his fine goalscoring form to wrap up a comfortable win for Newcastle over Aston Villa after the visitors played for an hour with 10 men. The hosts, aiming to leapfrog Unai Emery's men into the European spots, got off to a perfect start when Joelinton found Anthony Gordon after charging through the middle of the park.
The English winger coolly curled in a fine effort from the left-hand side of the box to send St James's Park wild inside 60 seconds. In a frantic opening half-hour, both sides looked threatening with Villa's Lucas Digne testing Martin Dubravka with a fierce free-kick.
The Magpies' Fabian Schar did the same moments later, driving a low set-piece under the wall after Matty Cash tangled with the Swiss on the edge of the area. A fired-up Jhon Duran then provided a moment of madness, appearing to stamp on Schar's head during the follow-through of a challenge before being given his marching orders.
Anthony Gordon gave Newcastle the lead inside a minute with a superb strike from the left. He received the ball from Joelinton before sending the St James's Park faithful wild. Aston Villa were getting back into the game but Jhon Duran got sent off for a stamp.
Alexander Isak then scored his 11th of the Premier League campaign from a cross. It became a case of clinging on until the break for Villa and Emiliano Martinez was forced into a save straight from the top drawer, denying Sandro Tonali with his fingertips after the Italian was found on the penalty spot.
