Alex Neil has emerged as a strong contender for the Millwall job after impressing in talks over The Den vacancy. Mirror Football revealed at the weekend that the former Stoke City boss, 43, was likely to be approached by Millwall, who have held talks with a number of candidates since Neil Harris' exit was announced earlier this month.

Neil has been unattached since he was sacked by Stoke back in December 2023, but boasts a wealth of Championship experience from spells with Norwich, Preston North End and Sunderland. The Scotsman is being actively considered for the role alongside Steven Schumacher and Matt Bloomfield of Wycombe Wanderers, who were also reported as targets on Sunday.

While they are fronting the race to succeed Harris, Millwall have also approached other managers, including Gary O'Neil. The 41-year-old was sounded out over the job, but the consensus is it's too soon following his departure from Wolves, which was confirmed on Sunday. Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley is another name who is not thought to be in the running for the role.

Further talks are expected next week before an appointment is made with David Livermore - Harris' former assistant - set to take charge this weekend when Blackburn Rovers visit The Den. Millwall then face Norwich City away on Boxing Day before a trip to Coventry City three days later. The Lions then welcome Oxford United to The Den on New Year's Day.
