Outnumbered bosses hit back as Christmas special branded 'depressing'

Outnumbered's creator has hit back after the Christmas special was branded "depressing" by some disgruntled viewers. Yesterday, the festive special of the BBC show aired, with the original cast back for one last outing. The Brockman family returned years later, but things were very different for Sue, Pete, and the kids.
Sue is played by Claire Skinner, whilst Pete is played by Hugh Dennis. Tyger Drew-Honey, Daniel Roche, and Romana Marquez play the three children - Jake, Ben, and Karen. As well as parents to the three, Sue and Pete were also now grandparents. The revival series was written and directed by creators Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton - but it tackled a hugely important topic. There was, of course, the humour, but it was also revealed that Pete had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
While it was treatable, Pete was worried about how he could tell his children and how they'd react. With Ben delayed due to travel hell, he had to find out via video call. By the end of the show, the kids were back making jokes, and Pete was glad they took it well.
However, fans have branded the festive special "depressing". One wrote: "Pete having cancer, I f***ing hate this," whilst a second added: "Why did they bring it back though just for it to have a depressing storyline on boxing day.". A third wrote: "I wasn’t expecting Pete to have c*ncer. They seriously put that in the Christmas special?! And all the stuff with Jane being depressed and Jake being so tired he can barely function and the neighbours being noisy… This isn’t Christmasy at all.".
