A passenger had a narrow escape after getting trapped and dragged by a moving train at a west London Tube station. The accident happened at Ealing Broadway station when their hand became trapped in the closing doors of an Elizabeth line train. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) announced over Christmas it is invesitgating the incident which unfolded at the platform shortly after midnight on November 24.
They want witnesses to come forward to help them understand how the accident happened. The passenger, who has not been named, was saved by a member of staff who managed to pull them away after the train had dragged them along for around 55 feet. The passenger, who had tried to board the train on platform 3, was ‘forced to run alongside it for several metres’ before the platform staff intervened, the report said.
WItnesses then managed to alert the driver and the train stopped, leaving the victim with minor injuries. A TfL spokesperson said: ‘We’re sorry that our customer experienced this distressing incident. Safety is our top priority and our operator, MTR-Elizabeth line, is currently carrying out a thorough investigation. We will always strive to learn from incidents and improve operational safety.
‘MTR-Elizabeth line is fully co-operating with the RAIB to establish the root cause of this incident to determine what steps they can take to avoid any further events of this nature and to share learnings with the industry. ‘While serious injuries on our network are rare, we are undertaking a huge range of work aimed eradicating such incidents and making travelling even safer for everyone.’.
