SCROLLING through the comments on her wedding photos, Lauren Kaye smiles at the sea of compliments she's received about her fairytale dress and show-stopping venue. But one message captures her attention. She briefly pauses on one comment from a stranger reading, “So sweet that you asked your son to walk you down the aisle, but shouldn’t he be in school?”.
“Happy for you and your little boy,” writes another. Baffled, Lauren, 31, dismisses the comment as well-meaning if a little ignorant, only as the day goes on the messages she receives on her Instagram account get increasingly sinister. “Never did I expect to be called a pedophile and a nonce on my wedding day,” Lauren says.
“People actually thought I was somehow marrying my 10-year-old son, it’s absolute madness.”. Of course social media promoter Lauren has not married her own son, nor has she wedded a minor but rather the 29-year-old love of her life, Hannah Kaye. The pair are constantly scrutinised by strangers because, despite engineer Hannah being just three years younger than Lauren - she's often mistaken for a ten-year-old schoolboy.
And it isn’t just their wedding photos that have caused controversy, with Lauren admitting they have to deal with stares and comments from strangers daily. “I am a very calm person and the comments online don't bother me. “It bothers me more when we go to a supermarket and people will look over Hannah and try to talk directly to me because they assume I’m the ‘mum’.”.
Lauren is well-seasoned when it comes to trolls having been sharing her life online for years when she shared her amazing 15st weight loss after having a gastric sleeve fitted, but for Hannah dealing with abuse from keyboard warriors will take some getting used to.
