Sam Fender has been confirmed as one of this year's BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend headliners. The Geordie legend will take to the stage at the three-day event in Liverpool in May. The festival will take place at Sefton Park from Friday 23 May - Sunday 25 May.

Sam was announced alongside Myles Smith, Wet Leg, Blossoms and Lola Young. They will be part of around 100 acts to take to the stage on the huge annual event. He shared his excitement of the announcement, telling his fans online all about it. He posted to Instagram alongside the words: "Headlining @bbcradio1's Big Weekend in Liverpool this May." with a hands-up emoji.

Among those loving the announcement was Sam's fellow North East musician, DJ Ben Hemsley. He responded with three love heart emojis. Fans were also buzzing, with one writing: "FENDER IN LIVERPOOL!!! HERE WE GOOOO, " alongside emoji faces with love heart eyes.

Sam will take to the Main Stage at the event. Stargazing hitmaker Myles Smith called his own inclusion "unreal". He said: "Big Weekend was always a dream of mine, and to be on the line-up again is insane.". And Blossoms called Liverpool a "city close to our hearts" as they shared their own excitement. Lola Young also promised her fans the weekend was "going to get Messy", as she gave a subtle nod to her chart-topping tune.
