Rangers urged to sign Manchester United star during January transfer window

Rangers legend Kris Boyd has urged his former club to sign a player from Manchester United to kick-start their season. Philippe Clement’s side are 14 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table ahead of Thursday’s Old Firm Derby at Ibrox.

Rangers were beaten on penalties by Celtic in last month’s League Cup final, meaning Celtic now have more major trophies than their arch-rivals for the first time since the 1930s. Boyd, who scored 101 goals in 143 league games for Rangers, says his former club’s form has ‘not been good enough’ and believes the team would benefit from the arrival of more experienced players.

As a result, the ex-Scotland striker believes Rangers should consider a move for Manchester United defender Jonny Evans. Evans, 36, has made 42 appearances since returning to Old Trafford last year but has barely featured since Ruben Amorim took over last month.
In-between his two spells at United, Evans enjoyed three years at West Brom and spent a successful five-year stint at Leicester City. ‘They’re struggling with injuries, it’s a patchwork back-four with the injuries they’ve had,’ Boyd told Sky Sports. ‘I just look at Rangers, I don’t really see any leaders in there.
‘I know there has been rumours of Nathan Patterson, but I can’t help but think of somebody like a Jonny Evans or something, maybe until the end of the season. ‘I remember we were like this in the past – and I know it is going back a few years – but you look at people like Ugo Ehiogu, sadly no longer with us, and Davie Weir arrived and not even just what they gave you on the pitch but off the pitch.
