Shane Lowry didn't hesitate to jokingly throw Rory McIlroy under the bus after both golfers scored impressive hole-in-ones at Pebble Beach on Thursday. The PGA Tour stars achieved the third ace of their careers on the first day of the AT&T Pro-Am tournament in California, starting with McIlroy's perfect tee shot on the 15th, quickly followed by Lowry's imitation on the 7th. The similarities didn't end there, as both golfing stars tied for 8th place, each carding six-under par. Naturally, they were in good spirits after their opening rounds and, as per tradition, any player who hits an ace must provide complimentary drinks for the media.
This was confirmed when journalists tweeted a photo of their cooler filled with bottles of Guinness, Budweiser, Amstel and Bud Light. Golf betting platform Read The Line shared the same photo with the caption, "A tradition like no other... thx Shane and Rory! @attproam #holeinone", to which Lowry cheekily replied, "Chuck it on Rory's tab". He then responded to a tweet showing the ice bucket of beers provided to the media with "Couple of cold ones @McIlroyRory," before posting a video of his famous shot with the caption, "The golf shot of my dreams".
McIlroy's hole-in-one was only the third of his lengthy professional career, which spans nearly two decades – a surprising stat for the golfing ace. Lowry, who stepped into the pro spotlight in 2009, matches McIlroy with the same number of aces under his belt so far. Yet, Lowry's trio of PGA Tour aces have been nothing short of extraordinary, etching his name at iconic holes including TPC Sawgrass's 17th, Augusta National's 16th, and now Pebble Beach's 7th.
The vibe was inevitably high-spirited for both Lowry and McIlroy after a cracking start at Pebble Beach. Day one brought about celebratory social media posts from Lowry in particular, giving fans a glimpse into his elated mood. The 'Signature' tournament, which boasts a staggering $20m prize pot, marks the first American Tour event of the season for the Irish golfer. The competition, which sees 45 of the world's top 50 players teeing off, is held across two iconic courses - Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill - and notably, there's no cut.
